Thinking complexity - Twenty years at IXXI

To celebrate its twentieth anniversary, IXXI will organise at ENS Lyon, from November 4 to 6 2026, an interdisciplinary scientific conference dedicated to Complex Systems, combining retrospective insights and forward-looking reflections on the challenges and future of the field.

Aim:

The aim of this conference is to bring together (in person) around twenty international speakers whose work has contributed to the shaping of the field and who will offer multiple perspectives, drawing on their different disciplinary backgrounds, ranging from physics, mathematics, computer science and biology to economics, geography, social sciences, epistemology and philosophy.

These different perspectives will put into perspective the fruitfulness and limitations of the concepts (emergence, networks, self-organisation, fractals, non-linearity, etc.) and tools (analogies, quantitative or algorithmic measures of complexity) associated with complex systems, and will also question their specificities and promises, particularly that of “universality”.

Another question will consist in examining the capacity of complex systems to provide conceptual and practical tools for tackling  current and future societal challenges (the role and place of AI in academia and society, ecological and energy transitions, resource management, responses to crises, science and politics...).

Beyond scientific exchanges, this conference will also provide an opportunity to reflect on the roles of institutions
in the development of this scientific field.
It also aims to produce a digital archive, which will bring together the speakers' presentations and a series of mini-interviews, and then make it public.
There will also be an event for non-experts in the form of a public lecture and Arts &  Sciences performances.
