Date : 15 mai 2012, 9h00

Lieu : salle 216, LIPHY, Saint Martin d’Hères

Title: Modelling free collective improvisation
By: Clément Canonne & Nicolas Garnier

Turing’s birth.

This Turing Centenary Conference will be held in Lyon on July 2-4, 2012. The
whole conference will be composed of four main parts:

*** On the first day, 6 public lectures intended for a broad audience. These 6
lectures, in French, given by researchers in computer science, philosophy
and epistemology, will cover the influence of Turing’s work on our society. At the end of the first day, Leslie Valiant will be awarded an honorary
degree from ENS de Lyon. He is currently T. Jefferson Coolidge Professor of
Computer Science and Applied Mathematics in the School of Engineering and
Applied Sciences at Harvard University. He received the Nevanlinna Prize in

Date: 2/4/2012 – 14:00

Location: room 216, Liphy (access to the building: call Jessie Sitbon on the intercom)

Speaker: Bénédicte Sanson (Department of physiology, development and neuroscience, University of Cambridge)

Title: In vivo mechanisms of collective cell movement and cell sorting

Abstract: Partitioning tissues into compartments that do not intermix is essential for the correct morphogenesis of developing animal tissues. However, the mechanisms that keep cells apart at compartmental boundaries remain unclear. We have shown in Drosophila embryos that actomyosin-based barriers stop cells from invading the adjacent compartment. Actomyosin cytoskeletal components are enriched at compartmental boundaries, forming cable-like structures which are not dismantled in dividing cells. When non-muscle myosin II (Myo II) function is inhibited directly at these cables using CALI, dividing cells close to the boundary invade the wrong compartment. We have proposed that local regulation of actomyosin contractibility is the primary mechanism sorting cells at compartmental boundaries. Myosin II activity is essential for several common morphogenetic mechanisms in Drosophila and vertebrate tissues, such as apical constriction during tissue internalization or bending, and cell intercalation during body axis extension. Boundary formation is thus another example where intrinsic forces produced by Myosin II activity sculpt developing tissues. In addition to intrinsic forces, extrinsic forces (produced by deforming tissues or fluid flows) are likely to be important in morphogenesis. We have found evidence that an extrinsic axial force extends the main body axis in Drosophila embryos, acting in parallel to Myo II-dependent active cell intercalation. The axial force elongates ectodermal cell shapes along the main body axis, this elongation becoming more severe in absence of active cell intercalation. Axial cell elongations are diminished in absence of mesoderm invagination, suggesting that this morphogenetic movement produces a force that propels axis extension.

Location: Ecole de Physique des Houches

Soft matter deals with many kinds of themes around bizarre states of matter and mobilizes accordingly various communities, from physics and biophysics to chemistry, and from fluid or solid mechanics to applied mathematics. Starting from a central topic, namely interfaces, the school will explore the different scales inherent to soft matter issues, and celebrated by scaling laws approaches. The goal of the school is to equip students and young researchers with the state of the art knowledge in soft matter, pointing to the novel perspectives developing in the field.

The Institute will work towards the desired, sustainable condition of our societies through the integrated analysis, monitoring and management of resources (production, distribution, access and circulation) by initially focusing on :

Challenging the conceptual frames on which nowadays agendas are set on issues such as climate change, energy, biodiversity, agro-food security, resources. Knowing that resources are at the hart of all our environmental and societal issues, we aim at setting up a coherent architecture and priority picture to guide further thinking and action.
Generate tools for the real-time metrics of regional resources and their dynamics / fluxes, in tight connection with evolving legal, normative, and financial contexts and instruments.
